The Land Bridge Writers Group

My name is Zachary Jernigan. For the Fall semester of 2005, I received scholarships from NAU's International Office and the Institute of International Education's Gilman International Scholarship. With these scholarships, I was able to study in Santiago, Chile. It was an amazing experience for me - one that I hope to share with others, and in return hear of others' experience. To celebrate international learning in Northern Arizona, I have formed The Land Bridge Writers Group. We only meet two more times this semester at Bookmans (1520 S. Riordan Ranch Rd.), but it's still a good time to join! We will meet at 6:30 pm on April 18th and May 2nd. You can bring writing samples if you like. Contact me at 928-282-7433, enjino9@netscape.net, www.myspace.com/santiagocolumbar or www.groups.myspace.com/thelandbridge

Thanks!

From Glimpse Magazine...

Dear Students,

We we need your expert insight! Glimpse Quarterly, an international news, travel and culture magazine that publishes articles written by study abroad students and international volunteers, is introducing a number of new departments. Help us help our readers better acquaint themselves with the world by sharing your thoughts on one or more of the following topics.

Reality Check:
Stereotypes are rarely true, but there's almost always truth in stereotypes. Choose one prevalent U.S. stereotype about residents in your host country and discuss the extent to which your own experiences supported or refuted it.

Faux Pas:
We've all had 'em: those embarrassing moments that arise because we missed out on some linguistic or cultural subtlety. Whether you've accidentally made advances toward your professor or announced to a puzzled host parent that you prefer bones for breakfast, we want to hear about it!

Trend Watch:
Who knew that mullets are currently the rage for young men in Santiago, Chile? Tell us what fads, gizmos, songs, TV shows, etc. dominate popular culture in your host country.

Eatables:
Sauteed crocodile? Share with us the tasty (or not-so-tasty) dishes that challenged your taste buds while abroad.

Reviews:
You laughed. You cried. You emerged a more enlightened you. What books, movies and music albums provide a true sense of the cultural realities of your host country?

TESL - What is it?

http://www.nau.edu/english/ling/index.html

Ever thought about teaching English overseas? Having a certificate or degree in TESL can help. NAU's department in English offers two opportunities for graduating undergraduates: a certification program and a Master of Arts degree.

The TESL Certificate provides foundational coursework and a coherent educational experience for people wishing to teach in a range of settings with ESL and EFL students, or wanting an Arizona ESL Endorsement . The Certificate program is intended for a) persons wishing to teach English language skills abroad, b) teachers at community colleges who teach L2 students, and c) K-12 teachers seeking ESL Endorsement through NAU courses.

Northern Arizona University's English Department offers a 37-unit Master of Arts degree in the Teaching of English as a Second Language (MA-TESL). This degree combines a strong theoretical foundation in applied linguistics with practical training in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. The principal goals of the program are to provide the linguistic theory necessary for ESL teachers, to equip teachers with practical skills of language teaching, and to prepare students for further study in English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics.
